Today I had a moment that changed how I think about technical hiring.
For the first time, I saw an AI-agent workflow produce a better feature than a standard manual workflow.
Not just faster.
The result handled more edge cases, needed less cleanup, and pulled testing into the first pass.

The old job looked like this:
- get a feature request
- write most of the code manually

The new job looks more like this:

- review the result hard
- step in manually only where direct control is clearly better
That is the real change.
In many real workflows, the main differentiator is no longer how well someone types code by hand.
The main differentiator is whether they can get to the right result.
One prompt already shows the new workflow:
Review this project first. Then add input validation to the user registration form, handle empty submissions, and run the available tests. If there is no test for this edge case, add one.
This is not autocomplete.
It is delegation.
That is also why the old image of a developer sitting down and writing everything line by line is becoming less useful as the default model. The higher-value move is to define the task well, let the agent do the first pass, and judge the result.
This is why I think hiring has to change.
Most technical interviews still test the old job. They overvalue manual coding speed, syntax fluency, and artificial tasks with no AI.
That is already a weak simulation of real work.
The stronger builder may be the person who knows:
- how to break down a vague feature
- how to give an agent a useful task
- how to review output fast
- how to ask for tests early
- how to decide what must stay under human control
The hardest part is not learning a new tool.
The hardest part is changing the default thought in your head.
The old default was:
“My job is to write the code.”
The new default should be:
“My job is to get the right result.”
That does not mean developers should never write code.
It means writing code by hand should stop being the default starting point.
The real question is “who knows how to use it well in this environment?”
Test less:
- memorized syntax
- whiteboard puzzles with no tools
- manual coding speed as the main signal
Test more:
- task framing
- review quality
- edge-case thinking
- judgment about when to accept, redirect, or rewrite manually
There are real risks here.
Bad review can ship wrong code faster.
Weak prompts create false confidence.
Some codebases and some expert workflows may still be slower with current tools.
That is not a reason to keep the old hiring model.
It is a reason to hire for judgment.

The future developer is not the person who writes the most code by hand.
